The Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) Geodesy Working Group (GWG) is seeking expressions of interest for a new Academic Representative to join the Working Group.
About the Role
The Geodesy Working Group (GWG) is a permanent subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM). The GWG comprises leading experts, advisers, and advocates in geodesy, positioning, and survey measurement from Australian and New Zealand governments (including state, territory, and Commonwealth agencies) as well as universities.
The Academic Representative provides expert advice, research insight, and strategic guidance to support the GWG’s coordination of geodetic activities across Australia and New Zealand. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to regional (AU/NZ) geodetic initiatives and strengthen collaboration between academia and government geodesy programs.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
* Be a current member of an Australian or New Zealand academic institution (e.g., university or research organisation), and
* Have a minimum forward tenure of two years at their institution from the date of appointment.
Desirable Attributes
* Expertise in geodesy, surveying, GNSS, height systems, geodetic infrastructure, or related fields
* Experience contributing to national or international geodetic initiatives
* Ability to collaborate with government, academic, and industry stakeholders
* Strong communication skills, including presenting technical information to diverse audiences
Role Expectations
The Academic Representative is expected to:
* Participate in quarterly virtual GWG meetings (and if possible an annual in‑person meeting)
* Provide academic perspectives on GWG projects and priorities
* Contribute to technical document development, reviews, and discussions
* Advocate for and support ICSM and GWG activities and priorities
* Support collaboration between academic research and operational geodesy activities
