The COMBINE Student Symposium is an annual, non-profit conference that aims to gather a diverse group of students and ECRs who are curious, passionate and eager to learn more about bioinformatics and computational biology. An invitation to attend and present at the upcoming “Microbiomes in Tasmania” workshop and mini-conference

First announcement: Microbiomes in Tasmania workshop: questions, collaboration and connection with industry Dates: Monday-Wednesday 29th-31st October Schedule: Mon-Tues is a mini-conference, Wed is a paper writing workshop, both days are approx. 9am-5pm Venue: TBC Cost: Free In Tasmania, microbial community analyses are being conducted through different organizations (e.g. UTas, CSIRO, AAD, TIA, private industry) and for different objectives, including understanding human, soil and agricultural health, food safety, biodiversity, evolution and biogeochemistry. However, to date there has been very little formal collaboration amongst these groups to facilitate discussion of research questions, techniques, and facilities to streamline research efforts and stimulate cross-disciplinary research, grants and publications. To initiate collaboration amongst these groups, we are holding a three-day event (Mon 29 Oct – Wed 31 Oct); two days of presentations on health and ecological microbiome research and applications, with a third day to outline a working paper for publication. We are inviting presentations from each major “microbiome” research group in Tasmania, as well as leading microbiome researchers from elsewhere in Australia. We have identified you as one of the prominent “microbiome” researchers in Tasmania and it would be fantastic if you could attend. The outcomes of the workshop will be to build a network and shared understanding of the microbiomes research being done in Tasmania. Fostering this collaboration could lead to more rapid advances and efficient research. In this project we aim to analyse some healthcare systems using a variety of mathematical models with a view to better understand them, and to provide meaningful results that will enable healthcare practitioners to be better informed when making decisions. In the role you will: * Undertake high-quality research of national and international standing in the field of modelling health care systems to meet project milestones of the Australian Research Council Linkage Grant LP140100152. * Prepare scientific papers, liaise with project partners and submit manuscripts for publication. * Contribute to the preparation of progress reports to agreed stakeholders, ensuring reporting obligations to grants are met and recommendations on future directions for the research are provided. * Prepare and deliver results at relevant national and international meetings. * Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities You will be employed on a full time, fixed term basis for 18 months. To be considered, you will have: * A PhD in mathematics or equivalent in a relevant field * Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality research in in applied probability and stochastic operations research, or a related field. * A high level of stochastic modelling skills. * Strong computational skills. * An excellent publication record in international peer-reviewed journals, relative to opportunity. Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A, Step 6 and will have a total remuneration package of $96,121 comprising base salary of $82,155 plus 17% superannuation.
